San Remo

When I landed at the airport in Rome, I made my way, by train, to San Remo. After 8 full hours of travelling, I finally arrived and right away, was greeted by English tutors of previous years. Along with me, there were about another 40 new tutors that got off the same train with me, all headed to the same place. That is where I met 2 of my closest friends during my week in San Remo.

Once settled in our hotel rooms, a few of us who had just met, went out for dinner to get to know each other a little better. We all talked about ourselves and our life goals and how we all found ourselves teaching English in Italy. Some got their information from school, such as me, and some simply googled "Teaching English in Italy" and they came across this site: http://www.acle.org/. Most people there weren't even becoming teachers. There were people who were in law school, some were paramedics, some were becoming doctors and some were actually teachers or becoming teachers, like me. Later that night, the company had organized a little get together at a bar called The Sax Bar where all 145 of us can get to know one another better before jumping into an intense week of training in songs, grammar and theatre in the scorching Italy heat.
Monday to Friday was spent learning new and old children's songs as well as reviewing our English grammar. We also had some theatre training considering that at the end of each week at a camp, each classroom was to put together a small 5 to 10 minute show, written and produced by the children with the tutors' help. For the entire week we were treated just like italian children in order to really get the feel of how we were to act with our own classrooms throughout the summer.
As for the food and hotel fares, all that was included in a fixed rate of 150 euros which included breakfast, lunch and supper, considering you ate breakfast at the hotel you were staying at and you ate the lunch provided by them during the training's lunch hours. And for supper, every night, the big group of 145 were separated into two smaller groups where they were lead to a restaurant where the menu was chosen by the company. However, if you wanted to eat elsewhere, you could do so but at your own expense. The food that was given to us throughout the week was quite tasty and filling, after all, it is italian food!
On the Friday of that week, we were all teamed up and sent off to our first job. I was teamed up with 5 other amazing tutors who I grew very close to and with some of whom I got to travel later on in my time in Italy. As for my first destination, well, I was fortunate enough to be sent to the beautiful and historical ROME!
